Six of Marco Fontana's early cases show some of the forces that helped shape the young P.I. It’s in high school, that Fontana discovers he has a knack for crime solving. Not only that, he likes it and is pretty good at it. When his English teacher is accused of murdering the school disciplinarian, Marco takes it upon himself to investigate. Some years later, after Marco has explored his career options, we find him in his first office in a rundown building on Latimer and Twelfth in the middle of the gayborhood. Trouble easily manages to find the newly minted P.I. there. From dealing with a stolen DaVinci sketch, to uncovering a vicious blackmailing murderer, to having a pleasant trip to celebrate Pride in NY turn into a nightmare, to presiding over a murderous leather competition, Marco develops his investigative skills and his techniques for solving difficult cases. Crimes on Latimer presents only six of Fontana’s many early cases. There are plenty of other mysteries in his past which will be explored and detailed in other collections of his early cases. This half-dozen crime tales opens a window onto Marco Fontana's world before he found himself dealing with the events of Murder on Camac.

If you like fun short mysteries you will enjoy this book. I got a lot of reading pleasure from it and the stories kept my interest because it didn't seem like a bunch of short stories but more a continuation.Product details

Crimes on Latimer From the Early Cases of Marco Fontana Marco Fontana Mysteries edition by Joseph RG DeMarco Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Having enjoyed two other Marco Fantana mysteries--"A Body on Pine" and "Murder on Comac"--I purchased "Crimes on Latimer." This book is an interesting hybrid between novel and collection of short stories. DeMarco cleverly presents a different mystery in each chapter but recycles various characters to provide unity and continuity. I highly recommend the book. It's a fun read.
This is a great book. Crimes on Latimer book is another winner for the author. The stories in this book are not just good mysteries, they're a lot of fun. I've read the first two books in DeMarco's Fontana series and love them. Both are filled with wonderful characters who jump off the page and seem very real. This is one thing that makes Crimes on Latimer such a good read. In fact, a number of the characters that I liked in the first two novels, appear in the stories in this book. I was happy about that because I wanted to know more about them and this book serves that purpose well, telling you how some of Marco Fontana's friends became part of his life and the series. The stories in Crimes on Latimer are like a prequel to the first two novels because everything in this book happens before those novels. These stories start when Marco is a student in high school and learns that he likes solving mysteries. He gets involved in finding the killer of his school's disciplinarian and discovers that he has a talent for detective work. Then the stories move into the period that revolves around Marco's first office on Latimer Street in Philly's gayborhood. Each of the stories gives the reader a good look at Philly's gay life and people. The new characters in these stories are lots of fun and it would be nice if some of them appear again in new work. All the stories kept my attention and provided me with a mystery to help solve. It's impossible for me to pic a favorite. They're all good. In one story, "Pride is a Drag," Marco and his friends go to a Gay Pride event in New York City which provides a nice change of scenery and a few NY characters that I loved. Of course, something happens and Marco is in the middle of a mystery in NY. One of my favorite stories is "A Killing in Leather" which is a great mystery with some sexy characters and lots of suspects. In a way the stories are connected because they follow each other in chronological order. At least it seems that way to me. I highly recommend this book.
I am not usually a fan of mysteries... but this was so well written I enjoyed it. I could find no flaws in the work... I'm not converted to suddenly loving mysteries, but have gained a huge respect for Mr. DeMarco's writing.
Whether or not you have read either or both of DeMarco's excellent books in his "Marco Fontana Mysteries" series, this prequel of short stories will delight any fan of good mystery writing. Starting with Marco's earliest "investigation" - of the death of a teacher at his Catholic private academy - to five later stories (the theft of a valuable artwork, an attack on a male stripper, the brutal murder of an older gay man who liked dangerous young men, sabotage at a gay Leatherman contest, and the disappearance of a well-known drag queen from a Pride parade), the author will captivate your curiosity with these concise well-written stories. You will also learn more about Marco's background, how he decided to become a private investigator, his decision to form and promote a group of male strippers, and the start of his long-term friendships with characters who also surfaced in the full-length books.
As a longtime devotee of good gay mystery writing, DeMarco is one of my favorite authors, and this collection of stories not only stands on its own as a great read, but makes me look forward even more to his next novel in the series. Much recommended. Five stars out of five.
