The year 2000 brought in more than a new millennium. With it came The Melding, which returned magic and fairytales, both light and dark, to the world. Seven years later, Discord Jones has gained some control over the psychic abilities she received, though they continue to grow and change, challenging her to adapt.
Yet her new "normal" is anything but, as a family outing leads Cordi into a maze of curses, life-altering changes, and the sure knowledge that gods walk the earth.
If that weren’t enough, Cordi is quickly losing her anonymity as well as neutrality in a world full of politics and intrigue. Except that mortal politics rarely end in death. In the Supe world, it’s practically a requirement.

My legs are sore.I have this rule of only reading the Kindle at the gym and I found myself spending 2-3x as long on the bike so I could read more. When the bikes were taken I even experimented with settings on the treadmill until I could walk and read without tripping and hitting my face on the E-stop.
I have been at a loss for words the past few days because I want to write a review that will do this book-- and the series--justice. I can't. The foreshadowing, the tightly-woven plot and subplots, the magical twists on current events, the fresh takes on old mythical creatures, they merge so well and without any wasted words it's impossible for me to describe without spoilers. Sometimes I like books to have pages of scenery, weather and wardrobe described, but if this series did that it would feel out of pace with Cordi's speed and wit. I'd still say it's "cinematic", but in a pre-Save the Cat Indie sort of way, not a cookie cutter Hollywood "let's see how many SFX we can fit in while you wait for something to happen" sort of way.
And it's funny. So funny!
You don't need to read the first one to understand what's going on here. This case relies heavily on dogs so if pets, mysteries and magic are your things you should check it out.

Something to Curse About Discord Jones Book 2 eBook Gayla Drummond Reviews
We have lots and lots of action and it was pretty fast pace, this was good thing. This is more character driven but we do get bits and pieces of interesting world building here and there. Pretty much all supes, gods and any fantasy beings you can think up can exist in this world; this does give the author quite a lot to work with. I’m still not excited about Discords relationship with Nick, he’s kind of a jerk in my opinion and really hope that he goes away soon; one of the reasons for marking this down, he’s a real annoying character. The other side characters are good though and keep things interesting. It’s a nice light distraction read and I’ll read the next book.
I suppose to be really up to date with the characters, you should probably read the first Discord - Arcane Magic - which is quite good, as are all the rest in this series, but if you decide you just can't face a series right now and want something TRULY good, try this one. I notice in the book blurb that it doesn't give away the "big" part of the book, and I won't spoil it here, but trust me, you won't be disappointed! It's a great twist in the book, totally unexpected, and Discord has to learn a LOT ... including how to walk. Gayla did a super job with this one! I've gone back to re-read it, just because I enjoyed it so much the first time.
In this second book about a psychic private investigator with a slew of abilities many of us wish we had, is hired by a woman to find her dog that was snatched while being taken for a walk. At the same time a number of people are committing suicide, only from Cordi’s telepathy when near the scene of one, she knows that these people are being forced into doing it. But why and by whom?
One thing I really like about this series is that Cordi is always learning something about the different species around her; supernatural and otherwise. And this particular story has a really interesting twist to it that just might alter a reader’s perception of their pets.
A great cast of characters and interesting situations. The author does really well in making us feel Cordi’s emotions and through that her friends actually feel like family. And we meet a new guy that you’ll definitely want to see more of in future stories.
I just wish these books were longer, and edited better.
I equivocated about the rating, as I enjoyed it 4-star-worthy, but I am leery of reviewers who kerplunk 4 & 5-star reviews on anything that they like, without looking at the world of books and literature as a whole. If Michener is a 5, is Gayla Drummond, this author, a 4? Probably not. BUT, if Janet Evanovich is a 4, or for some folks, a 5, then this book definitely rates a seriously high 3--say, 3.9, if I could rate it that way. (Edited on 11-19 after much thought, I've decided to up my star rating to 4; I enjoyed it that much. it deserves more than a 3.)
When I walked away from the Anita Blake series, pretty fed up with the whole "soft-porn-in-lieu-of-actual-plots-and-oh,-yeah,-any-kind-of-mystery,-too" thing, (And I am NO prude, mind you), I missed the early AB's. Back when she worked in an agency, beheaded Vamps, fought wrongdoers, and kicked ass. I tried Kim Harrison for a while, and a host of others, but none really "did it for me," not the way the first 3-4 AB's had done.
But this series comes damned close. I like Discord's character, and while I think she could use some fleshing out, who doesn't when they are 22? I have to frequently remind myself that she IS very, very young, and that explains a lot of her lack of depth. She also spent 3 formative years (15-18) in a coma, so...a teeny-weeny bit shallow, which, humorously, she even discusses with herself, in this book.
This book is definitely darker than the first. If you're an animal-lover, there are a) things FOR you in here, and b) things that might upset you in here. It's patently clear that the author loves her critters, and that type of love shines through in this book. You can feel it; in fact, it feels more real to me than the whole boyfriend angle. I don't want to say more, as I don't believe in spoilers in REVIEWS.
The reviewer who posted the spoiler (what's WRONG with you people, anyway?) did mention that he had to skim through a major plotline element. Interestingly, I found that I was also speed-reading it, and I don't know if that's because it freaked me out, or bogged just a bit. What I *do* know is that I couldn't wait to read the next one, and, oh yeah the one after that. There are four Discord Jones books now, and I devoured the last 3, pretty happily.
That same sort-of-claustrophobic/trapped plotline element, though, led to major "ability" and plot developments, all of which I feel seriously add to the story--as I said, animal-lovers alight here! The cause was righteous, the punishment just..what else can you ask for? The series is FUNNY, which I appreciate; not slapstick, not quite Evanovich, but very humorous.
Many of the previous characters show up here Illy, Percy, David, Kate (it's true--sometimes, you feel like you need a Character list to reference), the yummy but devious Thorandryll (naughty elf), Logan...(hmmm)...and the rest. Leglin is back, in a major way, and continues to grow as a character--so to speak. For fans of mythology, fantasy...there are tidbits here for almost everyone.
I do recommend that those who liked early AB give these a try. Having read all four to date, I can say that you can see the author's skill developing, as these books become a bit deeper and richer. The fourth--which I'll review shortly--is a real treat, particularly for big readers.
